At the beginning of every Prayer, the Muslims face the house of God in Makkah, thereby spiritually connecting themselves along an invisible line that passes through every point on earth, to the spiritual center in Makkah.

Whether they pray alone, or in congregation, they do so as part of the greater community of Islam. Imagine watching the scene from space; and we may see all the Muslims at Prayer like a huge flower the size of the earth, opening and closing its millions of petals. Each of those petals represents a Muslim at Prayer. Thus the qiblah which is unique to Islam has a significant role in bringing together every nation, race, and tribe on this planet regularly five times a day, so as to link them to the common center at Makkah.

Being central to the worshipers in Islam, the qiblah serves as the heart of the Ummah of Islam, supplying life-blood to the spiritual existence of Muslims all over the world and keeping the concept of unity in every sense of the term: God is One, the religion is one and the Ummah is one.

After seeing that the Jews and Christians would not believe in his message, Muhammad not only decided to change the qiblah but he also became very hateful and antagonistic towards them:.

O you who believe! Certainly you will find the most violent of people in enmity for those who believe to be the Jews and those who are polytheists , and you will certainly find the nearest in friendship to those who believe to be those who say: We are Christians; this is because there are priests and monks among them and because they do not behave proudly. Fight those who believe not in God and the Last Day and do not forbid what God and His Messenger have forbidden -- such men as practise not the religion of truth, being of those who have been given the Book -- until they pay the tribute out of hand and have been humbled.

When Allah's Apostle had conquered Khaibar, he wanted to expel the Jews from it as its land became the property of Allah, His Apostle, and the Muslims. Allah's Apostle intended to expel the Jews but they requested him to let them stay there on the condition that they would do the labor and get half of the fruits. Allah's Apostle told them, "We will let you stay on thus condition, as long as we wish. Jews kept on living there until 'Umar forced them to go towards Taima' and Ariha'.

Sahih al-Bukhari , Volume 3, Book 39, Number Indeed, We see you O Prophet turning your face towards the sky. Now We will make you face towards a direction Qibla that will please you. So turn your face towards the sacred mosque in Makkah — wherever you are, turn your faces towards it.

It was a test to see who truly obeyed Allah and his beloved Prophet and who disapproved. Allah says in Surah Al-Baqarah:. It was certainly a difficult test except for those rightly guided by Allah. However, those who truly believe in Allah and the Prophet immediately obeyed the command and faced the direction that the Prophet pleases. Let me share with you two takeaways from this story of faith and love so we can apply it in our daily life:.

From this story, we can see that Allah changed the Qibla to please the Prophet s. He even promised to give his beloved what he pleases.

Thus, Allah says in Surah Ad-Dhuha:.
