Looking all the way back to Internet Explorer 6, the very concept of 'standards mode' vs 'quirks mode' comes from this 'easy button' approach. More effort on the part of IT teams was required to get to standards mode, which made "getting modern" an opt-in choice. Jackson explains that as IE began to support more standards, Microsoft also realized it risked breaking applications written for an older interpretation of the standards. That meant, for sites in the internet zone, it would default to IE8 standards, but, for sites in the local intranet zone, it would default to IE7 standards," explains Jackson, noting this was also an 'easy button' solution.
Microsoft makes final push to rid world of Internet Explorer Microsoft confirms that Chrome extensions will run on new Edge browser. Microsoft's move probably won't help Edge and it's also bad for the open web, say Mozilla, Vivaldi.
Microsoft's Edge to morph into a Chromium-based, cross-platform browser. Microsoft is going to remake its Edge desktop browser by using Chromium components and by bringing it to Windows 7, 8. Microsoft Edge: What went wrong, what's next. Microsoft's grand browser experiment flopped in the marketplace, so the company is turning to an unlikely successor: the open-source Chromium project. If I understand Enterprise Mode correctly, I think we would have to explicitly add each site that we would want opened in Edge. So I'm hoping there is a way to kind of do the opposite. You must be a registered user to add a comment.

Creating technical debt by default In the past, Internet Explorer was optimized for simplicity at the expense of technical debt.

Actually many companies can and do wolrah If you're producing widget x and have been for 10 years and you're making money today just as you were 10 years ago, sorry there is no "business need" to upgrade to all these bells and whistles of technology today.
Valued Contributor. I'm a manager of a network where the standard browser is IE Just three simple reasons: 1 In the early days of Windows 10, when Edge came out and was new and exciting, it was immediately obvious that little had been done to make the kind of in-depth control available in IE, accessible, or exposable, even to advanced users.
Features had been stripped out. Some of that got added back in by extensions, but the thing about extensions is, they aren't guaranteed to be supported. Nobody actually liked it, compared to IE, and that memory of early stage complete let-down is probably persistent. Windows 10 changes daily, because it's "a service". That's a whole other issue, but is strongly if indirectly relevant to Edge migration whatever ones view.
To underline the point, before W10 there wasn't a mass "block telemetry" issue, with W10 there was. Service packs were unreliable. Drivers couldn't be blocked even if things broke. Remember the old sysadmin adage about not upgrading until SP1 came out? And as it works for them, they'll probably keep sticking with it.
Which meant, essentially, avoiding Edge. The existing OS has an existing browser As a final thought, IE is only problematic because of Microsoft's own past decisions to build it so.
IE incompatibility and Microsoft's lengthy policy of "embrace, extend, extinguish" applied to the browser and other matters, were notoriously features of Microsoft WIndows policy for many years. Edge is living, in a way, with their long term consequences. Edge essentially failed because of Microsoft's own choices - to make an OS with features that deterred a significant group of people, a browser that was said to be new and shiny but had major disillusioning gaps for those used to browsers, and to try and associate them exclusively, so that the exclusive Edge would act as leverage to migrate users to the new OS, whereas for a substantial group of users, the issues with OS and Edge alike acted as a deterrent to avoid both.
Microsoft mismanaged Edge in the early days, and that's still the burden it's living with. IE is mainly a problem because of Microsoft's own direct choices in the past and its decisions about how IE should behave. The matters that were problems then for those users will still be problems now.

I hope this feature will come to modern browsers very soon. Rafael Hasbun. Hell there is no trusting Microsoft in my opinion. Very unfortunate! Wann Harris. Oleg K I think you are missing some very key points and also taking an outdated approach when it comes to users and what they know or don't know.
We are moving, very rapidly, where being ignorant of technology and things like which browser you use, or not even knowing the name of them like you gave an example of, is no longer going to be acceptable without being really dangerous.
It is going to be up to those that know to educate those that don't, instead of trying to create crutches for them to stand on, or things that hide reality from them. You have to realize that by doing this, the "easy button" the author references, you are doing users a disservice and ultimately yourself a disservice, because years down the road, this is all going to come to a head where none of these band-aids no longer work and you nor your users are prepared to adapt to the change that started probably decades before.
This reminds me of an article I read yesterday where leasing companies are on a mad dash to install smart locks in their units, but the security of the systems are the last thing on any of their minds. Anyone half paying attention to security can see the issue with this. But the average person is not paying attention to security when it comes to digital devices.
It's going to take legislation to save these people or more likely, a massive event where someone breaks in, unlocks thousands of homes and people get robbed or worse. In other words, when it is too late. This article is warning you to do something before it gets too late. It's up to you to listen though.
Agreed, industry does matter indeed. And people do matter as well. All you can do is educate. It's up to them to actually use it. Like you said, they can still click the link and not follow directions, but at least the directions are there. Not following directions is their own fault.
Dinosaurs became extinct at one point But not providing directions is another point entirely. At some point the line in the sand needs to be drawn.
Glad MS did so. Mitch Beck. I have to side with Oleg K not everyone can switch. My company can't due to government sites that require IE, we cannot change this, they are not ours. We have to use them to conduct our business.
I know some have mentioned Enterprise Mode, but that isn't a complete solution. We cannot use Edge on server, so what are we to do with our remote environment. Go to the Tools menu, select Compatibility View Settings , and add the site to the list. Adding the same Web path to the Enterprise Mode and sections of the Enterprise Mode Site List will not work, but we will address this in a future update.
We recommend that enterprise customers focus their new development on established, modern web standards for better performance and interoperability across devices, and avoid developing sites in older Internet Explorer document modes. As you move your web apps to modern standards, you can enable the Turn on Internet Explorer Standards Mode for local intranet Group Policy setting and add those sites that need Internet Explorer 5 or Internet Explorer 7 modes to the Site List.
Of course, it is always a good idea to test the app to ensure that these settings work for your environment. Feedback will be sent to Microsoft: By pressing the submit button, your feedback will be used to improve Microsoft products and services.
