The next instalment in the trilogy, The Desolation of Smaug, is due out in December, with the final chapter, There and Back Again, set for December Costs a lot to live this green Reuse this content. It's the price of a budget skyrocketing.
Because Warner Bros set up a subsidiary company in New Zealand to produce The Hobbit movies, the annual financial reports have made the grand total of the films' production public knowledge. It's unclear how much--if any--of this total accounts for the extensive print and advertising campaigns that have been used to promote The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey and The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug.
But we'd be willing to wager that cost is counted elsewhere. Besides, the total figures wouldn't be in for The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies , which is hitting theaters this winter on December 17th.
That would make each of them the sixth most expensive film ever made. And yet, Warner Bros. Basically, it seems the studio behind the titular Halfling took a clever cue from Bilbo: go big, or go home! The second movie in the trilogy has the benefit of introducing Star Trek Into Darkness villain Benedict Cumberbatch as the voice of Smaug the dragon, as well as featuring the return of Orlando Bloom as Legolas.
One way in which The Hobbit has already beaten The Lord of the Rings by quite a wide margin, however, is in its price tag. This doesn't count the additional two months of filming and pick-ups carried out after that date, but it means that the production of The Hobbit has already cost twice as much as that of The Lord of the Rings. Some of that extra cost can be accounted for by inflation, but Jackson's decision to shoot all three Hobbit films at 48 fps using 3D cameras was almost certainly a major contributing factor to the expense.
The massive pile of gold in Smaug's lair that was shown in the most recent trailer for The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug is probably a pretty good visual representation of just how much this trilogy cost to make.
